Celebrating handmade with Bespoke Zine
Bespoke Zine, Issue 20, Spring, 2014, Adornment & Embellishment |
The article I've written is on embellishment of a different kind - taking an already published
book and turning the pages into a series of artists books and objects d’art. Biblio Art Awards is held annually in Port Fairy, Victoria, Australia. Artists choose a second hand book from the wheelbarrow in Blarney Books www.blarneybooks.com.au and create a body of work in any medium in response to that book.
The process of this transformation intrigues
and delights me. I was invited as a co-judge with Nicki Greenberg (author and artist)in 2010. This year, I entered as a participating artist and chose the Religio
Medici by Sir Thomas Browne, published in 1862. Writing about this entry is just another way of providing a response to the work and to show how it melds together several aspects of art, text and image.
There’s something about paper as a physical
medium that continues to challenge us; which causes us to explore the fundamental boundaries
between traditional and non-traditional ways of using it. Gelatin mono printing, stitchery, origami and several bookbinding structures have been employed to create this work.

While most of you know that I'm wild about yarn, :-) and glass, paper and books are my first love. However, even in my
books I use thread…
